I'm afraid this isn't much help, but I spent the last couple of days doing some moderately complex scripting using variables, and to be honest, I had to constantly flip between the four books in my Flash reference library. There was no single source that had all the answers. The Bible is great for some things, the Quickstart Guide good for others, and sometimes even the original manual had information that was either overlooked or not as clearly explained anywhere else. Even Flash 4 Magic came in handy on one variable issue.

The best online source I could find was, as usual, Macromedia's support section, where you can find out all about Strings vs. Expressions, and generally how to make variables work. Go to www.macromedia.com/support/flash and do a search for "variables" At least it's somewhere to start...

Sorry I couldn't be more help--but I can say I am very glad that I have all those books. Small price to pay ($100 or so) to have at least a semi-comprehensive reference source at my fingertips... :)
