Short timeline from the German language-book "Flash 4", by Sascha
Wolter:

1984 - Marc Center founded MacroMind
1992 - MacroMind and Authorware combined to create MacroMedia
1995 - MacroMedia acquired Altsys (Freehand)
1995 - The firm FutureWave introduced SmartSketch, a vector illustration
program
1995 - FutureWave developed the plug-in FutureSplash-Player, allowing
browsers to display Vector info
1996 - SmartSketch evolved into Cel-Animator, a vector animation program

July, 1996 - Cel-Animator was renamed "FutureSplash Animator"
End of 1996 - MacroMedia bought FutureWave
Beginning 1997 - Flash 1 came on the market, followed quickly by Flash 2

April 1998 - Flash 3 came to market and the real Flash revolution began
