I have spent many frustrating hours online trying to find one recently. The
problem is that most of them do not offer the facility of searching for
available hotels during a particular time (invaluable if visiting Barcelona
at grand prix weekend), rather they give you a list of hotels, and then you
have to go into each one and check availability. As you say, very
long-winded.

Good general sites are:
http://www.hotelbook.com
http://www.telmetravelclub.com
http://www.travelshoppe.com (my favourite as it links straight to Sabre so
it is a much faster process)

Good narrower sites are:
http://www.chateauxethotels.com (small independent and lovely places to stay
in France)
http://www.massey.co.uk (luxury hotels in Europe)

I am looking forward to the day when I find a site which has criteria like
'comfy beds' or 'lethal cocktails in the bar'. If only someone could
replicate the style of Conde Nast Traveller in an appropriate way online.
