I forget the source, but a study a few years ago asked consumers if they
were concerned with providing their credit card details using the following
methods. The results were -

Concern
Over the counter - Low
Over the phone - medium
Over the Web - High

The same study then showed stat's for credit card fraud. The results were
-

Chance of Fraud
Over the counter - High
Over the phone - medium
Over the Web - Low (minuscule)

No big surprise really, but the public impression is still guarded when it
comes to credit card transactions online. In my 5 years of web experience
I have only heard of one credit card problem. (Stated by a member of this
newsgroup a couple of weeks ago, involving CDNow if I remember correctly!)

I think Steve is correct, the merchant is probably the biggest concern. If
corruption does occur, I think it would happen on the inside, not by
someone 'sniffing' along the net.
