I have been watching the thread develop over the past few days and felt it
was about that time... ;)
To throw a different spin on the proceedings.
Viral marketing as a concept is a phenomenon that 'grows wild'. All we can
do as marketeers is sew the seeds. Your concern at this stage seems to be
that of volume of incentives / damage limitation.
What should be of more interest at this stage (I feel) is the viability of
the viral mechanics /application itself. I've learnt (particularly
painfuly) that the more contrived the campaign is, the less likely it is to
work.
Viral campaigns are very hard to execute well - which is why 5 different
people will often foward the same amusing video clip to you over the course
of 1 day , but (as a rule) we are not forwarded many [viral campaign]
offers..?
