Sounds like the distributed computing model - apps live only on the server,
and you only pay for the time you use the host processor and it's apps, as
opposed to shelling out >$500 for MS Office, etc.

It has benefits - lightweight client configs, software designed for a
specific host config should be more reliable, and updates would be immediate
, auto-magic, and free of charge.

It's the future, bro!

There is a related article in the April 2000 Scientific American. "Power to
the PC: Distributed computing over the Internet goes commercial". Check it
out if you have the opportunity -- it gives good info on what's around the
bend and who the players are. Not the same thing as shared apps, but similar
in mindset.
