Maybe an 'if frame is loaded' check before the set variable
command would help?

I assume you are targeting the vars the right way, if you
do it from an mc this can be a bit confusing.

Be sure to use 'Control > List Variables' if you are testing
the movie, this should show some useful info.

You'll see there whether headline is "" (empty) or contains
the text. It might have the right value while the bug is
somewhere else.
