Cath, I trust you've read the reference to Erika's technote in the parallel
thread (if not, then a search of the Flash technotes with keyword
"variable" would pull it up).

For navigation control, one additional wrinkle is that the SWF file streams
in linearly... if the HTML tells the SWF to jump to the middle of the file,
then it would still have to load the entire front half first anyway. For
non-linear access people often use multiple smaller SWFs. (If you're sure
the entire SWF is already in the browser cache then this is less of an
issue.)
