Ok.. well if you have never touched director before your D7 book should
suffice in teaching you the basics of how Director and Lingo works. Once
you feel you have a grip of the basics, go buy D8 and learn the new lingo
associated with it from the D8 manual/help. The rest of lingo that was in D7
is in D8. However, more than likely you will end up buying more books about
Director, but by learning from D7 book first means that you shouldn't have
to buy a basic learning book about D8 but probably a more advanced/specific
book in using D8.... Saves you buying an extra book.

If you are really serious about authoring in Director:
I suggest you buy Director in a Nutshell and Lingo in a Nutshell, by Orielly
Press.
