Damien Morton professes these profundities to all:

I don't know that that necessarily follows, or that is the only way to
go. I do know the application of technology for technology's sake to
every major site is more of a pain in the butt to me. I know that
vertical applications tend to better, particularly early on in the
life-cycle--I would prefer to use Flash for developing vector animations
than Illustrator, I would prefer to use After Effects for video work
than, say, PhotoShop. Same for content viewing--products like HotLine and
ICQ largely operate independently from any of kind of web based delivery,
with their own forms of name resolution, navigation and so on. ICQ
performs better than any web-based chat I've been to . . .

But, if may just be that designers are too eager to push every form of
content available, not unlike the newsletters in the mid-80s that used
every available typeface. Appropriate application of content might
prejudice me less towards vertical applications . . . i.e., if I am
shopping at an etailer every word and picture doesn't have to (and I
would prefer that it didn't) jump around the screen and make noises, and
I would prefer menus be plain HTML links rather than clunky Java or DHTM
drop-downs that work only spottily.

>When I go to a site and they link to a PDF

There is a strong argument for this, and it is certainly where everything
seems to be headed and eventually the browser layer will probably be
efficient and forgiving enough that it's much like an OS--all sorts of
things run on top of it, and it would make no more sense to have vertical
applications for viewing content than it does to boot from a separate OS
for your 3D work when you're done with your PhotoShop work.

I dunno. Depends on what kind of alternatives were available for the
browsers. OTOH, the QuickTime TV thing operates independently of the
browser as does the RealPlayer, but each features browser plug-ins and
integration as well. No reason why both fields couldn't be played.

That's what I'm hoping for. The thing is, too, is that often those snazzy
Flash intros that were so cool 2 years ago look kind of sad in comparison
to what people are doing today. So if you don't update your site a lot,
your nifty Flash intro can date you pretty quick.
