In case Marc isn't here, I'll give it a go, although I don't remember what
he told you exactly...

Go to your fill bucket & click the current color, then click the square with
the color palette in it and then click the tab for gradients. Set one of
the ends to black (probably is, already) and the other one to whatever color
(doesn't matter) and scroll the alpha indicator (clear to the right) down to
0% alpha. That makes a "gradient" fill from black to 0% alpha. Now you can
fill your rectangle with this new "color"...
