FLASH: Re: FLASH making symbols

Ok, there has GOT to be an easy answer to this question.  When I am working

on the stage and I need to make a symbol I simply select the elements I

want... group them up and either hit F8 or click Insert and then make

symbol.  This creates perfectly working symbols every time.  HOWEVER.... If

I select nothing.... click insert... then make symbol and then produce my

symbol from scratch in the symbol editing window my symbols never work.

When I copy and paste them back into the movie they act like graphics, not

symbols because I can't ever modify instance on them.  I'm sure what I'm

doing wrong is fairly simple but I can't find the answer in any of the

literature or help!  What gives?
