Your movie can ask web servers things, and receive replies as either
URL-encoded text or XML-formatted text, but if there's some database out
there it still needs to have some way to talk to things on the web.

That's where middleware comes in... Active Server Pages, Lasso, ColdFusion,
PHP, handrolled CGI, and so on. These live on the server and can connect a
remote database and a web server.

Which approach to use? Let the backend determine it. If there's an existing
database and an existing web server, then that serves to constrain the
solution set. You can then choose from the middleware solutions available
for that combo. Once you've got a web interface set up for the database,
then it's relatively straightforward to figure out which of the two Flash
web communication methods to use.

Summary: Flash can talk to a database, but can the database listen?
