Patrick's dead on.

If you cannnot follow the example of the newspaper industry--evolve into radio,
television, cable, internet, etc.--whatever the next new thing is, you sink.

You need to be able to effectively take whatever it is you have learned to date and
apply it to learning or evolving your own skillset.

If you cannot, you really only have yourself to blame. I'm sure sometime back in
ought-six someone realized this and started applying it...or a lot of us would
never have seen a horseless carriage.
