It's actually closer to Macromedia Generator. Dreamweaver 4 (and UltraDev

4) includes some Generator-style code that creates SWFs on the fly. For

input it uses an HTML form like any other Dreamweaver object or behavior.


For web designers this is a neat thing, because at its simplest it allows

you to quickly embed designer fonts for viewing across a range of browsers.

Bingo, no more hassle.


This SWF generation inside Dreamweaver also helps for compact buttons,

graphics inside fonts, more. There's an extensibility mechanism too, so

other developers can take advantage of this built-in SWF generation in, ah,

other ways.... ;-)


If you already use Macromedia Flash then this built-in generation is just a

workflow advantage... pretty fast to use, although it doesn't have the

scope of the Flash authoring tool. But for designers who don't already

create SWF this adds some important new abilities to their toolkit,

complete with wide existing support among browsers. Just solving the

font-embedding problem alone is a significant development.


The buy-and-download versions of Dreamweaver 4, UltraDev 4 and Fireworks 4

are expected in the first half of December, and it usually takes about a

week to insert the trial wrappers and installers... I expect to see 30-day

trial versions online before the holidays.
