Not sure what you mean by "this kind of thing", but I think you only
have to do what you describe if you want to redefine the clip
parameters, not set them. To set them for the Menu smartclip, you just
drag a copy from the Common Libraries to the stage, right-click it,
choose Clip Parameters, double-click the value of Items and then set
them all to what you want them to be (by adding, deleting, or
double-clicking to access and change).

Invisibly? Isn't the point of smartclips to program something that
others can use without needing to change the code? How can anything
happen invisibly -- I would've thought it would all need to be in the
code somewhere.

Still baffled by smartclips and haven't even gotten to the custom
interface part yet...
