It's hard to tell a cause from just a symptom, when the rest of us can't
see the handling, but for "What's the most common way people get a
JavaScript alert that 'movie has no properties'?" then it's when they're
using JavaScript to address a plugin object before the plugin object has
loaded.

(For example, if you're telling a movie to play or pause in from a
body.onload event, then the HTML will usually load long before the Flash
movie starts playing... the JavaScript wouldn't have anything to talk to
then.)
