there are no hard and fast rules - depends primarily on the worth of your
content and whether an audience is willing to pay for it. I have just
finalised a B2B project almost exclusively content based with a tiered
structure of free/subscription/super subscriber... but then again the
premise behind the idea was to develop content that would be unique and
worthwhile to the target audience... I guess you need to work out 2 things;
1) what is the relationship between the content and the real benefit of the
site to the end user... if the site is entirely content based a
subscription model could work as long as the content has real value (2) if
this is the case will the market support a subscription model/what price
point etc etc....

B2B is obviously easier than B2C from a subscription PoV though. And
subscription is not unusual.... however there are 2 outcomes by giving
content away... higher traffic figures thus more advertising revenue or
lower traffic figures, higher quality targetted ad revenue as you know the
subscriber profiles but also sub revenues... that is why we plopped for a
mixture of the 2... free content to wet the appetite and to build ad revs
and also pursuades users towards subs and more targeted ad opportunities.

Hope this helps/makes sense!

Subject: UKNM: Free for all content?

Dear All,

In a B2B context, can anyone tell me whether it makes more sense to make
content (news, reviews, advice etc ) free for all or reserve it as an extra
to the primary serive or product one is charging for. Or can someone point
me to a source that can.

Tx

Simon
