Just catching up on this thread. Have been looking at some Andersen
Consulting thing about Bluetooth and micropayments...not a lot of detail and
the link to the white paper was broken, but they claim to have prototyped a
bluetooth application whereby you can use a mobile phone to buy a drink from
a vending machine if you don't have any money, by letting the mobile phone
pick up an infrared signal from the drink machine when in range.

Clearly this is not a WAP application and it bypasses the telecom carrier
completely. Allegedly, such transactions are billed to your "online payment
account".

Can anyone explain how this kind of online payment account might work?
