Most users have a speed addiction and are very loath to conduct
eCommerce with sites that are so slow they are effectively unusable.

IP packets travel at the speed of light, so its important to have the
server near the customers for decent performance because packet loss is
a Bad Thing and you should get none with a decent ISP who peers at LINX.

By hosting a site/server in the US that's aimed at the UK market, the
data to and from the remote server will (probably) take different routes
in and out. The only reason for hosting an aimed-at-the-UK eCommerce
site in the US is one of cost. The reason (most) US hosting providers
are cheaper than UK-based ones is because they have good US<--->US
bandwidth but precious little if any of the expensive stuff -
transatlantic. Since they have little transatlantic bandwidth, they'll
be relying on offnet connectivity to get the traffic back to the UK.
Clue: once the data's offnet for them, they don't care about your site's
packet loss.

So choose a provider that can host your server in multiple locations
around the world.

This gets my vote.
