ashley - actually i disagree with you in some respects. nielsen's ideas are
also relevant to marketers -- whether or not you follow his UI principals.
if you were to read many of the design and IA articles you would see how
interface design weaves into how a site communicates with their target
audience. this is a marketing principle.

you say that "design exists to attract the attention
of the customer - from his perspective, design exists to assist the
transmittal of information." design is a communication tool therefore
intertwined with marketing.

as a producer, i often have to bring the creative aspects of the project in
line with the marketing objectives. if the architecture of a site is not in
line with those objectives, it can also fail. while i personally don't
agree with ALL of what nielsen says, i do agree that good navigational
schemes & intuitive organization are relevant to allowing your users
retrieve and access information THEY want. as a marketer, we exist to
service just that -- our market.

i believe if we start to divide camps into design, marketing & UI, we are
totally missing the point. they compliment each other.

Personally, I think Jakob Neilsen is wonderful, and you're wrong. We
shouldn't even be discussing him, in fact. As advertisers our job is to
attract the attention of the customer; Jakob is an information designer,
not a marketeer, and his philosophy approaches design from this
perspective. From our perspective, design exists to attract the attention
of the customer - from his perspective, design exists to assist the
transmittal of information. To argue from a marketing point of view that
Jakob Nielsen is fundamentally broken is to argue that a book should
consist of a front cover, a back cover, and a publicity campaign.
