Well from my research the options are:-

bulksms.com (seriously expensive).
quios.com (used by excite and msn.
Lycos use BT Cellnet (through genie).

And the latter two I've not got a clue on prices but they're bound to be
cheaper than bulksms.

As for free I doubt it. We are talking mobile phone companies here and hence
nothing is cheap (after all they've got £22billion to find). Every system
I've seen features a cost per message (if you're using a lot you might be
able to get it down to 4p a message but that will probably require 1,000,000
messages a month.

Interestingly, speaking to Orange about just this, they used to have a text
only talk plan (text1500). They closed it two years ago as inter-network
messaging became possible.
