Hi Rob.

Though I'm not 100% sure what you mean, it may help if you stick to one
stage color, then in the lowest layer of your .fla place a full-stage-size,
solid, rectangular-shaped graphic symbol. You can use color effects on
this symbol to change your background wherever in the movie you like (just
insert a keyframe and apply color effect for that frame's instance). When
it's time to export for your .gif, change that layer to "guide," which
makes it invisible on export to .swf (and, hopefully, on export to .gif
also).
