I imagine that the pickers do pick the items from the front of the shelf
(much as the supermarkets would prefer customers to!) - however, with
Tesco at least, you can add some text next to each item on your list -
so you can specify that bananas should be firm and slightly green or
that yoghurts should have at least 'x' days before their best before
date or whatever turns you on.

If they fail to pay heed to your instructions it's time to complain,
and, for repeat offences, to vote with your feet and take your business
elsewhere.
